live music
The Bell has live music three times a week (Monday and Wenesday evenings from 9pm and Sunday lunchtimes from 1pm) ranging from jazz to blues to folk to roots to some things we are not sure what to call. We also have vinyl dj's on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings
Band listings for October/November 2011
Wednesday 2 November
World Government
One government that can deal with fireworks - in fact they provide their own musical ones - and equally with 10 tons of dynamite in the basement thatll be Paul at the bass and the ferocious drums/percussion section. Anonymous masks not obligatory.

Wednesday 9 November
The Zen Hussies
Just because theyve long moved on from hanging out in here all the time doesnt mean theyre not still crucial chaps about town, and just cos they dress charity shop chic doesnt mean they dont have a ferocious work ethic yet more new material in prospect. Still an essential rendezvous!
Monday 7 November
Kangaroo Moon
Folk Trance pioneers, antipodeo-celtic explorers, and still one of our favourite bands twenty-plus years on. And its always early evening at a great summer festival when these guys hit the stage
Sunday 6 November (lunchtime)
Beth Porter
Already the most in-demand bandmate and session player in town, some of you may still be surprised to learn of the delicate charm of her own material and own band. Dont know what configuration shell be in, but whatever way round itll be a genuinely special session.
Monday 14 November
Tony Remy, Anders Olinder & Friends
Tony is simply one of the very best guitarists in the country, and he loves to play here because they give him the opportunity to play what he wants rather than what his usual megastar employers require: mostly electrifying blues with the odd groove or jazz inflection. An absolute treat for all concerned.
Sunday 13 November (lunchtime)
Mills & Chimneys
Shooting Star collective of Young Folk Award finalists (David Gibb being the most familiar round here) and others (not all youngsters either) on one-off tour of one-off project of Derbyshire songs. These kinds of projects frequently bring out the best in the participants, and thats definitely the case here.
Wednesday 16 November
The Heavy Quartet
Ferocious musicianship, high technology and spirited ensemble blowing; genre hopping and utterly unique; serious players with a sense of humour bubbling under, a night at HQ is always memorable.
Sunday 20 November (lunchtime)
Emily Portman & Friends
More young folkies and more of the very best: Emilys spooky faery debut album gained her all kinds of good notices and great connections, but she first played for us well before they all caught on and will be an utter delight in an intimate space like The Bell.
Monday 21 November
Leon Hunt N-Tet
Banjo King Leon has always lead stonking bands, and the N-Tet format is his licence to reconfigure to whatever formation best serves the music of the moment. This one does feature some very familiar old faces and, on home turf, celebration will be in the air tonight.
Wednesday 23 November
Christopher Rees Band
Its that elusive Country Soul thing, but no trouble invoking spirits of the genre classics, and - altho from South Wales - Chris has both the voice and the writing to sit comfortably on top of his suitably hand-tooled high-performance backing.
Sunday 30 October (lunchtime)
Gilmore / Roberts
The latest phase of the Britfolk revival keeps throwing up wondrous young players, and we could fill the week with them without shortchanging you on quality. Some, however, are a cut above even that high standard, and those we have to share with you. Fiddle, guitar, boy/girl voices, the highest renown beckons.
Monday 31 October
Groanbox
From obscurantist drifters with home-made instruments to 4 stars in The Guardian in only a couple of years, and theyre still fab, and still our mates. Probably gig of the month against some very stiff opposition. Its blues but really not as we know it, Jim. Oh, and spooky it will be too...
Sunday 27 November (lunchtime)
Electric Lobsters
Oo Blimey Missus, theyre back! Erstwhile Bell favourites absent and even silent for a good few years, back with a snap in their step and a new spark in their hearts. Still in the pink!
Monday 28 November
Moscow Drug Club
Fantastic swing musicians (John Pearce on violin, I need say no more) whipped into line by the silky steel of Katyas vocals. Unfortunately we dont serve any of the usual fare of a Moscow Drug Club - apart from our excellent line of vodkas - but together we can get some of the atmosphere going
Wednesday 30 November (lunchtime)
Edenheight
Dark nights call for some dark music but were not going to leave you groove-less in a dark alleyway, weve brought the professionals in. They funk like a barrel load of bootleggers and the enlightenment is for free.
