THE BELL
SEPT 2010

Wed.1
The Raydiators

It's our old mate Johnny with a new dubbed-out ska, rocksteady, & everything like that band. It'll be boss. Already featured on Radio 6 sessions & Steve Lamacq. Trust us on this one.

Sun.5 lunchtime
Maclaine Colston & Saul Rose
Starred in the Bath Folk Fest the other week, but really we all know that the pub is Mac's natural home, and, well, folk's natural home too. M&s (or S&M, take your pick) are at the top of their game at the mo', played on Radio 3, no less, and well worth a couple of hours of your time.

Mon.6
Jim Blomfield Quartet

Still unchallenged for the best pianist in the west crown (OK this side of Keith Tippet) and equally at home playing latin, filthy funk, or key-crunching jazz harmonics. Band unconfirmed from here but he has the best players in Bristol in his phone book so no problems envisaged there.

Wed.8
World Government

Possibly the best-ever lineup of the funk behemoth. Resistance is futile. Some of the best times we've had this summer have been with these guys so let's squeeze another one in before the nights get cold.

Sun.12 lunchtime
Cindy Stratton
Not heard from our Cidny in a while, but she's got a great new album done recently so we thought a return to The Bell was a good idea. Songwriting and vocal the youngsters are still just dreaming of...

Mon.13
Dave Betts Quintet

Another old face recently popped back into our contacts book, drummer Dave (the latin Art Blakey) has always had one of the best rhythm & groove combos in the region, and it will be a great pleasure to see them treading the Bell boards again.

Wed.15
Burly Chassis

And now for something completely different... Live breakbeat funk from electronic/analogue party people, squeezing every bit of music they've ever loved (and some they invented) into a single pulsating pullulating package.

Sun.19 lunchtime
[TBC]

Mon.20
Blue Railroad Train

Bluegrass from Paris? Yes indeedy but there's a yankee dandy in there too for the authenticity and it's a seriously highspeed train (like the French do?) with primo prestidigitateur playing.

Wed.22
People’s String Foundation

More weirdoes from Cornwall (in the nicest possible sense), combining classics with ye olde trip-hop and some funky soul bits. One of the most original things we've heard all year. Don't be average.

Sun.26 lunchtime
Stompin’ Dave
Dave is so much the sort of thing we like in here on a Sunday lunchtime that we can only apologise for not getting him in before now. Fans of Swamp Donkey, Rag Mama Rag and country blues in general, or just goodtime music, are onto a winner here.

Mon.27
Chicago Music Explosion

(band names TBC)

Wed.29
Cantaloop

Consistently one of the hottest tickets in funk voiceover energy boosters, we can only assume that they haven't yet gone monster 'cos of their punkish DIY attitude to business, and because of course they're utter dynamite in a small venue like this. Just thank your luckies again and get in here tonight.
